Hi Derek,

Your little DAC sounds really fantastic after two days of burn-in-process. The sound is naturally, colourful and fast - no internal detours.
Its not clear for me that's sure. How can it be possible that such a little DAC is able to hit a TEAC VRDS 25X CD Player?
Do you have some recommendations in request of the Digital (75 Ohm) cable?

Greetings

Comment from Francis * NEW * 1

Hi,

I'm very happy with the D1, especially since I plugged it directly into my power amps ( 2 x onkyo M-508 ) it is much better than through preamp.

Thanks and regards

Hi Derek.
When you recommended that I choose the Shek d2 I took your advice and I am
glad I did.
I have just listened to Mozart's Requiem for the third time.
My God it sounds wonderful.
I have not enjoyed this piece of music so much since I sold my Roksan
turntable 27 years ago.
It has turned my Cyrus cd player pre amp 2 power amp Monitor Audio set up
from crisp bright and dramatic to Smoooooth.

Many thanks.

Hi there,

It sounds tremendous.......
Unfortunately the white led no longer shines, but I will live with that.
Many thanks for your help and I look forward to buying more products from you in the future.

G'day Derek,
I have received the d1 on Tuesday and has been burning it in since. The unit arrived and operated with its toslink input without problem. I have not tried the coaxial input yet but will only do so over the weekend.
The sound quality at zero hour was good. The most significant attribute of the DAC was the musicality and is relaxing to listen to. Mid-range is smooth. Soundstage is very wide but I'm not sure about the depth yet. Specific hi-fi attributes are not quite there at this stage but that's the concerns of an audiophile and not a music lover. Most notable deficiency is the bass. However, please keep in mind that I am comparing the d1 to my Marantz SA-11S1, which costs quite a lot more, and the d1 is not fed by the Marantz itself right now, but my Apple Airport Express with Apple Lossless encoded files. The slight nasalises of certain voices seems to be clearing slowly.

Best regards,

Hi Derek,

I have received The Dac in the week. The Dac is very good! The sound is really vinyl like. I have played many cds with the Dac D1 and I think that it has a very good musicality. The listening of cds with this Dac is very pleasant and enjoyable.

Derek-

D1 arrived yesterday safely. I connected it to my second system right away and have been much impressed.

The source is ITunes + Apple Airport Express in this config - right away I noticed a beautiful tone from your DAC. And the bass has real depth and control.

Overall fit and finish is of very high quality - well done. I am somewhat surprised by the illuminated foot at the back.

I will fill you in more after the break-in.

Thanks again for your excellent service and product.

Best Regards
Ben

Hi Derek,

This is my comments about d1. I am using it with pd s06 drive and focusline cable. I'am very happy about the sound, neutral, smooth and less aggressive that the pd s06 drive! Very good DAC.

Cheers.

Stephane.

Hi Derek,

This is a great DAC, sound is excellent, enjoying it very much.  I just left positive ebay feedback for you (sorry for the delay, I bought the DAC from you before I even got my amp and speakers).

Thanks,
Darren

Comments from Keith

Derek,

Aside from the slight teething problem with the rips at 48khz, the dac is absolutely lovely.

As you probably know a sb3 has a very respectable built-in dac. The Shek d1 is not an instant revelation. It does tighten the bass slightly and helps open out the slightly ?closed soundstage of the sb3. This is all relative to a Naim CDX2/XPS2 source, which is hardly a fair
comparison. Yet it doesn't embarrass itself and you need to really concentrate to know which source is playing.

I lent the dac to Paul to try with his Apple Airport Express. He loved it and will probably place an order as a stop gap measure while he waits for the availability of a Naim SuperNait amplifier which has a built-in dac.

I am very pleased with the dac and cannot recommend it or your service highly enough.

Thanks
Keith

Comments from Andrea

Hi Derek,

I come back to report my first impressions about your Shek D1 after a couple of days of trial.

First of all here is my system setup:
- loudspeakers: Mission 780
- integrated amplifier: Primare I20
- cd player/transport: Pioneer PD-S06
- speakers cable: Supra Ply
- interconnect cable: Cardas Crosslink
- digital cable: Analysis-Plus Black Digital
http://homepage.mac.com/andreaepicoco/photos/ShekD1.jpg
http://homepage.mac.com/andreaepicoco/photos/HIFI_setup.jpg

OK, your DAC - without any doubt - sounds well, very well. My feeling is of a less screaming sound compared with the Pioneer, less coldly analytical. But the sound lacks also a little more punch and resolution in the bass frequencies... could be the PSU? I read somewhere over the web that replacing the PSU with something more powerful can affect positively the sound. If this was true could you be so kind to suggest me what type of PSU I should look for?

Thank you very much for your attention.
Best regards,
Andrea

Comments from Gaetan

Hi Derek, Here is what I think of the dac, after a few days in my system.

About the dac: The dac itself looks quite nice, very robust and well made.
Everything seem to be of very good quality. I can't say the same for the power supply,
which looks quite cheap. To validate this feeling, I had some problem with it,
and had to put the dc jack in a given position to make it work. I finally replaced the
power supply with another one, and the problems are now gone. You should really
consider sailing your dac with a better power supply, with an as good quality than the dac itself.

Personnally, I'd really prefer giving a few more GBP, and get the dac with a better

power supply - that's only my point of view though. About the sound: Surprisingly,
The first thing I noticed, compared to my CD player, is the very similar sound level.
I remember have read that the sound was significantly lower with the d1 (and a lot lower with the d2) compared to other devices. I can now say that wrong, and that the difference is very slight.

The next thing I noticed, still compared to my CD player, is the great extend in the bass,
while keeping them tight. Also, the percussions doesn't seem compressed as they were before.

Finally, I noticed how the dac produce a very pleasant and natural sound.
That's not something which seem obvious at the first listening, but it become absolutly o
bvious after several hours: I still have the same pleasure to listen my music. I have also
plugged my optical output from my macbook in the dac. The result is very very good.

I'm rediscovering the pleasure to ear my music stored on my computer :-) Also,
a really great thing is that I can now listen my old albums again. Led zeppelin or pink floyd for example, were sounding poor and flat. I can't say they now sound as good as some recent records,
but they sound pretty nice compared to my CD player. I can listen them again
- that's very nice :-) To give a conclusion, after a few days of listening, I can't say that's
a revolution in the sound, as what I have read earlier in some forums (perhaps because
I don't put myself in the group of the audiophiles), or as when I have bought my new amplifier and speakers, but I can say that the d1 is giving me the good bass which were lacking in my system,
and a very natural sound that I can listen for hours with the same pleasure. Also,
the discussions we had by email were pleasant, and I really appreciate your offer to
ship out a new power supply when I said you I had some problems with mine - that's
definitively a good thing to have a good contact with the sailer while buying from
an as far country as France. In the next weeks,

I'll try to compare the sound of different CD player with some friends. I let you know the results

Regards, Gaetan

Hello Derek!

Just wanted to let you know I prefer your Blackbox DAC to the Slimdevices
Transporter! I am returning the Transporter now and will get more of the
smaller
Squeezeboxes, which I will run with your DACs.

When are your "new products" coming? You are giving a hint on your new
website
to a product named "H1", but there is no further information.

Dear Derek,

What should I say more, after testing your DAC... THANK YOU :-)
(-: That you make it possible, that in the whole world people who can't afford
something like dCS can also be made happy... Very happy... ;-)

And as the Ebay Item-Nr. ends by an 8, I'll keep that forever... ;-)

Hi Derek,

Just to let u know that I received the DAC yesterday. I am still trying to compare it to my old Micromega T-DAC but so far it seems to have an

edge in terms of musicalityˇKˇK

Derek
Thanks for the speedy service. DAC arrived on Friday,
got wired up to a dvd player on repeat, then plumbed into the main system yesterday.

Sounds very, very good......

Hi Derek,

I have now listened to your dac for a while. My initial reaction still holds true...your dac results in less listening fatigue then the internal dac of the squeezebox. I like it especially with classical music. For loud guitar music I find it marginally less dynamic. But this can be caused by slight volume differences. I did not use a db meter to check. Nothing that bothers me though. I like it so much I have hardly played any cd. I have it connected to a regulated power outlet from my amp. So its automatically switched on and off with it. Seamless integration, nice :)

Comments from Bests

Hi Derek,

Dac sounds very natural and musical just what I was looking for-
I have several systems which include differing types of speakers (full range in tqwt, open baffle, bass reflex, stereolith), different amps (SET & Push Pull EL84s, class T digital, solid state) and various pre-amps (nude stepped attenuators, passive pot and active solid state preamp, MF tube buffer). I also have several? different DAC's - Benchmark DAC1 which I use with a Monarchy DIP 48/96 upsampler, Mhdtlab Constantine (1545a NOS) with a Monarchy DIP Classic reclocker and also my CDP's own Burr Brown 1732. I like to mix and match, tweak etc to get best sound with each system using components that represent good value for money and also just see effect of different components/tweaks - fun hobby! Anyway I was looking for a DAC producing a very natural sound to be used in combination with my home made? SET amp (EL84. EF86, EZ80 4w) and my homemade tqwt speakers which use single Fostex Fe206e drivers (with phase plugs added) hence no crossover? - the amp is fed by a pair of scott endler stepped attenuators and a Musical Fidelity x10 v3 tube buffer. Your DAC best suited this set-up, it retained the soundstage and imaging of the others but was less fatiguing giving very little up in resolution.
Well done and many thanks for the great quality of service

Hi Derek,

As promised, after some time of use, I can give you some information about the DAC.

It really works great and I love it very much.

It has "softened" the sound of my system and in the meantime I discover more little details in the music.

I am very happy with the DAC.

Thanks a lot.

Hello Derek,

Well, it's been up and playing for most of this morning and I really like
it.? The system is a squeezebox connected to the DAC and on to Naim amps.
Compared to the Naim CD player, there are differences, but not in any bad
way - the key thing is that the music flows wonderfully.? So, I'm very
happy!

Comments from Freddy

hey Derek - your DAc sounds very good with modest solid-state electronics compared to another player w. choice of upsampling - impress = more coherent, and good tight bass on my strange little Karlson setup and acoustic drum cd

I like this kind of speaker on drums - the slotted HF tube can be mounted internally to fire partly into upper chamber

Comments from Nigel

Derek

What can I say!

Recieved item today!! 3 days from HK - very impressed

But the sound !!!! - this has transformed my player, If this has a "break in period" I will be soooo happy, as the sound straight out of the box is exceptional.

Comments from Paul

Hi,

Received the DAC today. Thanks for the very speedy delivery (especially considering the distance it had to travel). I have to say, on initial listening, that it sounds better then the RME HDSP 9632 I was using before - warmer and less bright, while still being detailed - which I prefer.
I have left + feedback for you.

Thanks

Comments from Marc

Hi Derek,
Thanks fpr keep me informed. You did actually a great job with this DAC. I decided to keep the buffer, although your new dac doesnˇ¦t need it. I searched for years, since the CD was developped, for a smooth an narural sound like an LP. I had a lot of CD-players from Denon, NAD, Marantz, harmann & kardon... and was never satisfied. Now, with my solid Sony-Player, your DAC, the buffer, an normal integrated amplifer by marantz and good loudspeakers by Dynaudio I got the sound I was looking for. Finaly my philosopy was right: you donˇ¦t need very expensiv and powerfull stuff to get a very fine sound. Most important is the source, solid drive assembly, a very good dac and high-quality cables. Thatˇ¦s what I get. Thank you very much!

Comments from Knut

Hi Derek!

I think like every electronic device it needs a little running-in but the first listening is already very good. It is a very neutral DAC and it is nearly completely disappearing in my system. I am using a TEAC VRDS 25X player and the sound of the unit is in my opinion better than some critics say. It might be a little layed-back but since the rest of my system maybe is a tiny little bit on the analytical side thats fine to me. I am constructing the best sounding amps on this planet (;o)...)- valve preamps and classe-a poweramps (pp and se transistor)- have a look at my website vwvv.valvet.de if you have the time.
Your DAC is probably adding a little extra warmth without loosing detail and thats perfect!

I am using a very basic cable from transport to DAC now and will try a better one next week.

Comments from Jonathan

Hi Derek,

More importantly, it sounds very good! I'm am feeding it from a Pink
Triangle Cardinal transport, into an Avondale Audio Grad 1 pre amp
(very small English company - one man,? really - excellent quality),
into power section of Bryston B60 integrated (temporary), into ATC
SCM10 speakers, in a small room. The sound I'm getting is warm and
detailed, as I expected after hearing Mike's in London a while ago.

Hello,

Got it this morning, mush faster than I expected. Thanks a lot. Works great too. A few questions,
Will there be any risk to my amp and speakers if i accidentally play surround sound via the digital in to the deck ? (Currently I'm using a dvd player as a transport, will be changing that in the future).
If I want to replace the power supply with a smps, does it have to be 500mA, or can I use a 12V 1200mA smps ?
Last question, is it okay for me to leave the dac on 24 hours a day ? Is there a risk for it to overheat ?

Thanks again for the excellent product.

Comments from Jorge

Hi Derek.

I have been listening your DAC and I like it: much more detailed and open sound.

It beats the Alesis Masterlink DAC.? But that is easy.? So I had to compare it with other DACs/Players.

I have compared to a Goldmung mimesis 10+

The goldmund has even more detail, more dynamic sound and it is just a bit more open.

Thank you,

Hi Derek-just to say that the DAC sound is getting better as it runs in,i am very pleased with it. it has been said that a better power supply will make an improvement,is that your experience. can you leave feedback for this transaction please.

Hi, just wanted to let you know that the more I listen to your DAC the more I like it! I don't think my hifi ever sounded this good.. :)

Just a quick question - as there are no power button on the DAC, I assume it is okay (and safe) to leave it plugged in all the time?

Hi Derek!

I'm part of the TNT-Audio forum and I just posted the letter below. Thought
maybe you'd like to know!

Extracted from TNT-Audio Forum:

Hi all!

Just wanted to share a piece of audio happiness with you, since you all know
the feeling when something sounds "just right" when you put a record on, and
you just can't leave your seat except for changing record.

Last week I received a NOS DAC Sigtone from Derek Shek (Monica2 will be
tried sometime). At the same time I changed a pair of Linn K20 speaker
cables against a pair of Supra Ply 2.0. I have a very modest set-up: Sony
DVD => Supra Trico => the new Sigtone DAC => DH Labs BL1 => unmoddified
T-Amp => Supra Ply 2.0 => Snell K original (but with new woofer). After
two-three awful days of running in of the cables, yesterday everything
started to change ... And now I hear music as I have never heard it before.
The music just pours forth, tight, present and swinging but still laid back,
and certainly with lots of air and a soundstage just filling the room. You
sing along, tap your feet, dream away and smile when Joni, Muddy, Ludvig,
and Dmitri are in the room with you. And the best of all you don't need
records of high technical quality, the music fills the room, swings and is
full of its original emotion all the same.

The Sigtone was great out of the box but just keeps getting better (good
hifi qualities (soundstage, details, focus, bass etc.) but first of all it
makes great music. And the cables are now really starting to make the Snells
bloom in a way the Linn K20 didn't.

Thanks TNT-Audio for directing me to the T-Amp and to Supra cables. Try the
Sigtone NOS DAC by Derek Shek out! And the Snell Ks seem to be a T-Amps best
friend :o)

?

Cheers to all!

Hi Derek,

Yes chassis has arrived, thank you! Transferred board over no problem, have
been listening today for the first time...

Initial listening impressions are very good. Very natural smooth unforced
sound but without sacrificing detail, rather like analogue really! Nice
vocals, good bass weight and extension too!

Thanks again, very nice product, keep up the good work!!

Kind regards,

Comments from Raphael

Hi Derek,

I finally managed to give the DAC a bit of a listen last night and the results were very interesting.? The transport was just a Philips DVD 963 (DVD/CD/SACD) player.? I found that the most marked differences were in two areas - bass and ambience.? First of all, bass was much more controlled and separated rather then a dull washy thuds.?? Secondly the 'ambience' of the music changed from a sharper more pronounced presentation to a more laid back feel with clearer separation of instruments.? Interestingly there was very little change to vocals but I did not get a chance to try out too much.

I have done your ebay feedback for you - all positive of course.

Best regards

Hi Derek,

Just a quick note to let you know the DAC arrived safely on Friday and everything is fine. Hooked it up to my Squeezebox quickly last night and itˇ¦s a massive improvement over the analog output on the Squeezebox. Iˇ¦ll also post feedback on ebay. Now for some serious listening!

Cheers,
Paul.

Derek,
I've left feedback for you on eBay for the DAC, but just wanted to add a bit more information.? Package arrived on Thursday morning with no problems, no duty to pay.
I got the DAC to replace an ancient modified QED digit (dual power supply) that runs off a Marantz CDP.? Rest of the system is Naim 32-5/HiCap/250 into Totem Model 1's + REL sub.? First impressions after one day:? vocals more intelligible and enjoyable, treble much more natural (less fierce but surprisingly, more detail), bass more tuneful, better defined.? Overall sounds more 'right' than the old DAC.
I realise this isn't much of a comparison, and I haven't heard any of the recent CDPs that people rate, but I am already very pleased with your DAC.? Thanks for a great product.

Best regards,

Dear Derek, the DAC arrived on Tuesday Morning, that is very very fast!!! Thank you. I have hooked it up on a Accuphse E 206 and an old NAD 512 and a pair of Bonsai Akustik Primus Loudspeakers : what a great sound! Shelby Lynne is filling the room, only as you get closer to the speakers you notice them at all!! Great!!!! I will now check all my CD Players for the best result and sell the others. Thank you again for handing out this fine DAC at a reasonable price. Please give my regards to Knut Cornils ( Valvet Amplifiers ), he talked me into buying the DAC! So, thank you Knut! I will spread the word, Derek, thank you. Yours, Alex.

Hi Derek!

I have been playing with your DAC.
I connected it to:

1) Squeezebox SB3
2) Cheap DVD Player
3) My CD Reference, a lovely Linn Ikemi

And whilst I must say your product makes very bad digital sources listenable (like the DVD and SB3) it off course doesn't stand a chance against the Linn.

I you want to know what I miss....well, the Linn-Ikemi-sound. Hard to describe, but this thing has elegance and sparkle, and also very deep and controlled bass.

I have read many reports this DAC was one of the best people have ever heard, and cannot support that. But given the price and the task I bought it for, it is perfectly all right.

I am still surprised how much better my cheap DVD Player sounds with your DAC!

Regards,
Tobi.

Comments from David

Hi Derek

I'm very pleased with the DAC so far. I would say that the most obvious improvement is that the sound stage is more open with a much better sense of separation between instruments and performers. The image is somehow more stable and generally results in a closer approximation to a live performance.

Thanks again for the excellent service - I'll leave you feedback on ebay today.

Cheers

David

Comments from Steven

My first impression was how much texture and detail is presented without any
harshness or ‘tension? I played various classical orchestral pieces
(including authentic baroque instruments) and I think this is the first time
I have heard strings actually sound like strings!! They resonate just like
in the concert hall ... without the usual high frequency ‘hash?I often hear
with CD.

Also I noticed that all of the frequency range seems to be presented
equally, from the low and very tuneful bass notes to the high but sweetly
textured treble. I can easily follow instruments in the mix and I hear low
level details I hadn’t heard before!

Brass instruments also sound very accurate with a nice rasp but again with
no harsh ‘bite?to the sound.

Similarly concert piano (very difficult to capture correctly) sounded very
convincing. Lovely clean sound with top notes really ringing out sweetly,
and mid to lower bass notes with nice texture and harmonics.

The soundstage is large and has real depth not just a shallow wall of sound.
Lots of acoustic cues are present from the recording space. It’s just like
being there!
Bear in mind I am comparing this to a Meridan ?250 cd player which I have
come to love !

Derek you are a genius!

I don’t know what magic you work in that little black box... whether it’s
the absence of jitter or the purity of the basic signal. Whether it’s the
crisp leading edge of the notes and lovely natural acoustic decay, but the
sound is not just ‘analogue?but to my ears incredibly accurate ... tonally
and texturally.

I also played some pop and R&B music to check rhythm and timing. Well no
problem there! The impact of percussion and the drive of electric guitars
made the music very enjoyable. Couldn’t stop my feet from tapping the floor!
Also female vocals sound lovely and full. I read once that with a good hi-fi
you should hear not only the breathing but the spit on their lips! Again
your little black box worked its magic... very impressive.

So you will probably gather I am very pleased with this lovely little dac
and I am a definite convert to the ‘non-OS?school of hi-fi! If this dac
improves any more it will be almost unbearably addictive...!
My heartfelt thanks to you Derek. I feel you have elevated my musical
enjoyment to a new level.... keep up the good work!
Sorry if I have gone on too long .. but please feel free to use any of my
comments on your website! I will recommend you to all my friends!

Kind regards and very best wishes,
